  • Midnight Madness Organized Bike Ride (August 18th): http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/3734021
  • 30 minutes of high intensity Surrey racing with my kids in Coronado (they won!)- followed by body surfing in Coronado.  What a great way to celebrate my 50th b-day.
  • Spin Class (Aug 21): Recorder Malfunctioned.  I hit 175 rpm at the end of a grueling 2 hr workout!!  A 50th b-day party followed.
  • September 2nd: Irvine to downtown San Diego, 87 miles. It was the hottest day of the year.  Hydrated at convenience stores every 10 miles with sports drinks.  Record humidity for San Diego, 100%.  I averaged 15.5 mph, but was it worth it?
  • September 4th - setback.  Hospitalized in Las Vegas for dehydration just as my son Aaron and I were leaving for a backpacking trip to Duk Lake (near Mammoth).  It took me 2 days before I could walk without assistance.
  • September 16th - took a mini bike ride - Viejas to Pine Valley and back (about 29 miles).  I didn't come close to any personal bests, but the goal was to see if I could climb & hydrate.  Mission accomplished.  Finished the day at 7 Bridges Golf Course, where I volunteered for Rolf Benirschke's Legacy Golf Tournament.  Rolf was a big supporter (financially and emotionally) for my 5 day Crohn's Disease ride up the Hudson River Valley.  Some day, it might be nice to tour the golf course....
  • September 18th - biked Boulder City to Hoover Dam (business trip to Henderson, NV)
  • September 19th - biked Red Rock Canyon with my son Aaron and his pit-bull.  That dog really loved running next to me, but I insisted Aaron give him a rest (Aaron's girlfriend Jeannie was driving behind us in the pickup truck).  That dog took a 20 minute rest then jumped out of the window of Aaron's truck and finished the ride with me!
  • September 23rd:  Viejas - Pine Valley, sunrise highway to Mt Laguna, returned via Cuyamaca State Park and Descanso.  Not my best ride - the last 35 miles felt like a strong head wind, even when going downhill.  Our first blustery day of the Fall of 2007.  The sights were beautiful - that soft lighting on the mountains and forests with dark to light grey clouds hovering above all the mountains.  Threatening to rain.  Then a spectacular sunset as I headed down Westbound I-8 at mile 55.
  • September 30th - Irvine to Solana Beach. training for the miles.  Rode about 80 miles (the spedometer battery died, but I didn't :-)   Averaged about 15.5 mph, and finished the last 30 miles with a gentleman that was at mile 115 of a 160 mile ride.  He belongs to a double century club and encouraged me to join.  They do 200 miles in one day.   Maybe after Israel...
  • October 7th - Tour de Poway century ride - 104 miles!  I rode with 2 terrific friends (Lisa Hill and Susan Valentino)  from the Leukemia Society'sTeam in Training.  It wasn't my fastest century, but was definitely my strongest finish.  Averaged 13.6 mph, 5300 feet of climbing.  And I still had enough left for several more miles and I never "hit the wall" (anxiety attack at mile 70) in this century.  I think I am ready for Israel.   Susan and Lisa were great company. I don't particularly enjoy city street rides, but it was nice to have friends to chat with in those wide bike lanes.

Cross training with my friend, Huan Hsu. We climbed Mt Lafayette near Lincoln, New Hampshire on July 4th, 2007

Biking the coast

Day 2 of my trek from Monterey to San Luis Obispo along highway 1. Cliffs one foot to right of my bike and cars one foot to the left. I had to pull over to enjoy the scenery, in the few turnouts along highway 1

A TNT training buddy. Bruce Milliken has beaten a very agressive form of Leukemia. Besides being an awesome cyclist, Bruce is a black belt and is an inspiration to those of us that might want to skip the stretching.

Lisa Hill at mile 70 on the Tour de Poway. She is a member of TNT and she smiled like this all 104 miles!

Susan Valentino -TNT training buddy - former marathon runner, now a long distance cyclist. Even though she didn't feel well, she found what it took to barrel through all 104 miles of Tour de Poway - a great inspiration.
